The dark part is the area under the exponential curve. It has only been a few 100 years since every person on the planet was completely convinced that the world was flat. The space under the singularity curve is the most likely space of that which will soon be understood. So in some ways, until that curve starts leveling out, there is much to be learned and I would guess that what we understand to be absolute limitations to exploring the universe will be sea monsters and mermaids.
