I read a story called "Piccadilly Circus" by "Chris Beckett" and it was very interesting as it was about virtuality and the interaction of real and virtual beings as they were created. It was interesting in the fact that it could easily be a prequel to "The Matrix". There was something in it that I can't quite put my finger on that is the scary part of people living more and more vicariously through the internet. It was in 2006 "The Year's Best Science Fiction" from St. Martin's Griffin press. I will have to look up more from this author. It seemed to speak of the erosion of physical existentialism by a creeping process that was driven by the base desires.
It appears to be free at the link through Google books. There are some other interesting stories in the collection also.
