I have found an even better way to present equations and remember where I was at in a complex calculation. It is Gnu Tex Emacs. This a quick sample and I think it is going to be useful.
I also investigated "gramps" a data base for genealogy which seems very easy to use, intuitive, and free with Linux and it supports the common genealogical data base format GEDCOM. I also tested a few other utilities for plotting in Python.
