Galaxy cake walk

This article at Daily Galaxy is very interesting and speculates on the positional problems of the earth in it's walk about the galaxy. It covers the idea of locally heavy debris and shielding that the galaxy affords. I would be interested in applying the same techniques used in 'little b' to this data.
