Trying out python basemap , I discovered that debian has a conflict with "pip" which is installed for python-pip and perl version. Basemap has to be installed from source for linux, but documentation is good and compiles in a few minutes and installs and passes tests. The image is a convolution of a plot it produced using :
map = Basemap(projection='ortho', lat_0 = 50, lon_0 = 100,
resolution = 'l', area_thresh = 1000.)
