The combination of technologies and methods leads to some interesting opportunities for experimenter design. Manufacturing on a large scale has advantages in cost, but in an environment where change is the norm, it would seem that the tools to extend and redesign should be the actual product. It would be more reasonable to sell equipment that revises and extends technology than the product technology itself. I know that controlling design is a command control position. It isn't the most productive or sustainable though.
