It seems that we will become aliens in the process of seeking them. The very nature of life is changing every day and things like "clone wars", minds in glowing spheres, genetically engineered space craft, living homes, cyborgs, virtual life, and many more things, are becoming realities. We may meet our first alien when it is born on Earth.
I found that Google has a program called "sketchup" which is free to make 3D models on Windows and OSX (mac). Models can be created there and imported into blender.
