This article about horizontal transfer of genetic material [ called the "Space Invader" genes] is interesting as I suspected that the action of retro-viruses was a factor in the sharing of genetic sequences between species. The very existence of mosquitoes and the viruses would seem to suggest that this was possible and new research suggests that lateral transfers between species could be a significant factor in evolution.
