Upgrading Kubuntu 8.04 to 8.10 (Ibex)

This link goes to the site which explains how to upgrade. I am upgrading one of my machines now and with my connection it says it will take about 90 minutes to get the new version. I think it is a good idea to get ahead of the rush and get the new version installed so it can be verified. I am competent with computers and software and so I am giving YOU the free use of my time as others already have to test it before the official release on Oct 30. It looks like there are some neat new features and I am looking forward to complete KDE 4.0 if that is part. I will report how it goes and if there are issues I think should be resolved before release.

All together it took about 3 hours unattended to get everything installed and clean out all the old. This is on an HP laptop and next I will do the other machines using a network update so I only download once for all the machines on the LAN. I just did a restart and it shutdown quickly , showed 2.6.27-7 and began the boot. Went to terminal, indicates starting NTP server and looks like it is going to hang [Argh].Yes it hanged itself and now I have to figure out what I did wrong or if somebody else failed to account for something in this case. Boot try 2 stops at the same place and is not dead as I can go to console by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 and run commands.

I decided to just play with it for a while and I went to terminal with "Ctrl+Alt+F1" and logged in as a normal user. I did "netstat -untap" and then a "wget" of my blog to see if network was up and it was. I tried "startx" to start the graphical interface and it bombed ( a technical term used to mean it bombed ) and so I renamed /etc/X11/xorg.conf and tried "startx" again and it failed again. I saw "xorg.conf.failsafe" there and so I did "sudo cp xorg.conf.failsafe xorg.conf" and then "startx". WOW this startup screen is cool! So it is working and I suppose I am obligated to file a shooting report, ( troubleshooting that is ). I looks nice and it is a different style that may take some getting used to. All in all, not a real pain, just a minor irritation and it can be easily fixed for the Oct 30 release I think.

This is from the upgraded machine. It is really neat graphics, but some of the steel is missing. Way pretty, but the configuration for the graphics system seems to be the problem. It works, but my extra monitor is not even recognized. It isn't that big of a deal, but the style is too nice and I bet it would impress a new user and perhaps I am being too much of a dinosaur who lives at the console prompt shouting "grep off my lawn".
